Is attending a truck driving school a requirement to obtain a Louisiana CDL?

While truck driving is not a formal requirement, it is highly recommended. What is the cost to attend a Louisiana truck driving school?

The cost of your training depends on which truck driving school you attend; tuition fees vary between schools. Most schools will cost between $2,000 and $5,000.

Are there financial assistance options to help me pay for school?

Most schools offer several different financial assistance programs to help students pay for school. We can help you find the school that best fits your current financial situation. Some of the programs offered by different trucking schools include financial aid or tuition payment plans. Also, many truck driving companies will pay for your training if you are willing to work for them or some offer tuition reimbursement.

Are there truck driving jobs available even after Hurricane Katrina?

Yes! In the years since Hurricane Katrina, Louisiana has been in the process of rebuilding and reconstructing, which means there are more truck driving jobs available than ever.

What are all the costs included with obtaining a Louisiana CDL?

The CDL application fee costs $15 while each endorsement costs $5. The skills test portion of the CDL costs $60 (not including rental of a commercial vehicle) and you are required to pay parish CDL fees, which is $51 in the Orleans parish and $41 everywhere else.

How long does truck driving school typically last?

Again, this depends on which Louisiana truck driving school you attend, but most typically last between 3 and 5 weeks. Proper and adequate training should consist of both classroom instruction and actual behind-the-wheel training and instruction.

How old do I have to be to attend truck driving school?

You must be at least 18 years old to attend truck driving school; however, you will be restricted to intrastate driving, meaning you are allowed only to drive within the state of Louisiana. You must be at least 21 years old to drive across state lines.

What kind of physical conditions will disqualify me from truck driving?

You will be medically ineligible if you have any disabled body part that hinders your ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle. Also, diagnosed diabetes and any respiratory or eye (specifically coronary) conditions may also disqualify you. You will be required to obtain a Department of Transportation medical certificate which states you have no pre-existing health conditions that will affect your ability to drive safely.
